Lisa( lsmithlas)

I'm a technologist mostly database and web stuff with a smattering of IT management. My background before that is in technical theatre. I worked for over 10 years as the Crafts Superviser for the Shakespeare Theatre in DC.

I was a VISTA Volunteer for one year with Teaming for Technology DC which operated out of The Support Center, a non profit providing counsulting and training to other non profits. The Support Center sadly is out of business. As a VISTA I worked primarily to provide non profits with custom database solutions and I also did some talks on IT planning.   I also began researching new technologies and started to get interested in how they affect the community.

After my VISTA year I worked as the database person for The Survivors' Fund out of Northern Virginia Family Services. We provided case management services to the survivors and families of the victims of the 9/11 attack on the pentagon.

I now work as the IT/office manager for the American Humanist Association. I primarily do database work and website work, and manage a small number of computers and users. It's a great place to work with a wonderful staff.

I'm interested in Privacy and Civil Liberties and how the internet affects politics and society in general. I recently wrote an article on RFID for The Humanist and I'm doing research on other technology isssues that affect privacy and civil liberties.

Why did you join CPSR?

I want to be part of the solution. I think CPSR is working to guide society in the proper creation and use of technology.
