United Nations Secretary Kofi Annan has selected forty people from
government, business, and civil society organizations to participate in
his United Nations Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG). The
WGIG will be chaired by Mr. Nitin Desai, Under-Secretary-General for
Economic and Social Affairs. The group's objectives are to organize an
open dialogue on Internet Governance, produce a report by the summer of
2005, and to propose recommendations to the World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS). CPSR President William Drake was among those appointed to the WGIG (the press release incorrectly identifies him as CPSR's Chairman). Drake was nominated for the position by the WSIS civil society coalition and its Internet Governance Caucus. The UN press release, including a full list of WGIG participants, is available at http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2004/pi1620.doc.htm and the WGIG's website is at http://www.wgig.org
