The Third Biennial Participatory Design Conference
Overview
The Third Biennial Conference on Participatory Design is being held in Chapel Hill immediately following CSCW (October 27-28), at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Conference Center. In the last decade, participatory approaches to design have gained adherents around the world. These approaches have at their core the involvement of users in the design and development of new technologies and work practices. The third Conference on Participatory Design will be attended by an international community of researchers and practitioners. Sessions, panels, workshops and invited addresses will cover techniques for involving users in the design process; theoretical, political and ethical aspects of participatory design; educating practitioners; developing package software; and a range of other topics. This year, for the first time, PD practitioners will display and demonstrate prototypes, products, representations of work practices, materials used with clients, and a variety of other artifacts used in and resulting from participatory design processes. We encourage those who are using participatory approaches and those who may be interested in trying these approaches to attend.
