CPSR 2004 Board Elections
CPSR 2004 Board Elections
To run for election or vote in CPSR's 2004 Board Elections you must be a member in good standing on April 14th, 2004. If you have never joined or have lapsed, join/renew either by using the form below and sending to CPSR, or online at: http://cpsr.org/membership
The deadline for CPSR Board Nominations is Wednesday, April 14th, 5 PM U.S. PST.
During the spring of 2004, CPSR will hold elections to fill five vacancies on its Board of Directors. Three are for three-year terms. Two are for completing two years of two resigned board members' terms. Terms will be assigned based on votes received; the top three candidates will be elected to three-year terms while the next two candidates will be elected to two-year terms.
Duties expected of every board member include:
- Attending the preponderance of physical and virtual board meetings (there will be one or two daylong physical meetings and up to 11 two-hour virtual meetings each year)
- Maintaining membership in CPSR during tenure on the board
- Being subscribed to the board's email lists
- Voting on 75% or more of motions before the board
- Complying with CPSR Bylaws
- Helping to raise funds to support CPSR and its groups
- Avoiding actual and apparent conflicts of interest by foregoing direct compensation from CPSR and complying with CPSR's policy on conflicts of interest
- Participating on board committees
- Acting as liaisons between the board and its projects, chapters, and working groups
Candidates for the 2004 board election should understand that CPSR is considering major changes in its governance and organizational structure, and that the completion of these changes is a likely board duty during the coming year. All Directors are elected to "at large" positions. The Board selects its officers from amongst its membership. This year, the incumbent Chair and Treasurer will not be running for re-election to those positions. Candidates should be aware, though, that the position of Chair is being changed to one of Vice President, with the duties of assisting the President as necessary and acting on his/her behalf when he/she is unavailable.
All positions take effect on July 1, 2004.
Any CPSR member in good standing as of April 14, 2004 who has legal adult status in his/her home country may submit a statement of candidacy in English for the board election. The statement should be 500 words (or less) and include
- A description of the candidates background and qualifications, including relevant educational and employment history, past work with CPSR, and any other relevant experiences;
- A brief policy statement outlining the candidate's perspective on the CPSR program and the issues facing the organization; and
- Optionally, a link to the candidate's own web page.
The statement of candidacy will be submitted to the Board Development Committee for approval. If approved, the candidate will appear on the ballot. Candidate statements will be sent with election materials and posted on CPSR's Web site. Any candidate may also submit a longer statement, which will also be posted on the CPSR Web site.
Any CPSR member in good standing as of April 14, 2004 who has legal adult status in his/her home country can alternatively be nominated by petition, which should include a candidate statement as described above. Such a petition must be signed by two percent (2%) of the membership and submitted to the CPSR office by the Wednesday, April 14 deadline. For additional information, please contact the CPSR office at cpsr@cpsr.org.
For more information on the structure and organization of CPSR, see http://www.cpsr.org/cpsr/org.html . The CPSR Bylaws may be found at http://www.cpsr.org/cpsr/bylaws.html . Please keep in mind that this information may not yet reflect changes currently in progress. For a list of current board members, see http://www.cpsr.org/cpsr/board.html
Nominations must be received in the CPSR office by 5 p.m. U.S. Pacific time on April 14, 2004, via email to cpsr@cpsr.org, with the subject "Nomination". Members can have access to the candidates to discuss issues with them by joining the Elections list via http://lists.cpsr.org/elections
Ballots will be mailed to all members by April 28, and must be postmarked back to the CPSR office no later than June 7, 2004. Ballots will be counted July 1, 2004.
Signed,
Herbert Kanner
