Digital Television
Technically, the move to digital television—which can carry much crisper pictures as well as digital information that may lead to integration with the Internet—was the subject of heavy debate and disagreement between broadcasters and computer companies; the technical issues have finally been resolved. To allow a transition to digital TV, Congress and the FCC have given broadcasters an enormous range of hitherto unused television spectrum. Many public-interest groups, saw this as our one chance to ensure that the interests of democracy and public service are met by broadcasting; progress on the issue is reported by the Benton Foundation.
