Government censorship--Key legislators

Key Legislators

These are the Senators and Representatives on the conference committee that is merging the Senate and House telecom bills. Deliberations started on October 25, 1995.

If you live in one of their states, write to the legislator and strongly indicate that censorship is unconstitutional and will be ineffective in protecting children. Also write to Senator Robert Dole and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who have a great deal of power to influence the committee, and to President Clinton, who has said he might veto the bill.

Please write conventional. Email addresses are included here because they are popular, but representatives generally do not pay attention to email.

The date when the committee will start meeting, or will submit a final version of the bill to Congress, has not yet been established.

All these Senators voted for the Exon provision. You might consider writing to all of them, even if you do not live in their state.

House members of the committee

The committee members from the House require a more complicated description, because some are considering the whole bill and some are considering only individual Titles in the bill. The Cox/Wyden amendment against censorship is part of Title I. The "Protection of Minors" item imposing censorship is part of Title IV.

Why did you join CPSR?

I have been a member for about 14 years, but it seems to me that, given the current state of our nation (and the world), CPSR is needed more than ever to help protect and strengthen democracy and human rights.
