The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse - has a gopher with many privacy related files. They cover legislation in California and at the Federal level, they have a series of white papers and press releases on line, and they have a set of FAQs that cover a wide variety of privacy-related topics.

You can ``opt-out'' of direct marketing and telemarketing by having your name added to the databases maintained by the Direct Marketing Association. Write to:

The MIB compiles medical records from insurance companies and doctors

The MIB will tell you if they have a file on you, but in some cases they will send its contents only to your physician or dentist. Therefore, be sure to include that person's name and address.

This is the organization that collects mail-in warranty and product registration cards and sells the lists compiled from them.

This company compiles records from banks on people who bounce checks a lot. They are covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, so if a bank refuses to open an account based on ChexSystems' data, you have some legal recouse.
