Participatory Design: Histories and overviews

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Many have written histories and overviews of the Participatory Design approach usually starting from socio-technical design and the collective resource approach in Scandinavia in the 60s and 70s. Most of these are unfortunately not accessible on the web. Here are a few that are:

David Levinger's history of PD for the PDC'98 conference
Includes a discussion of the Collective Resource Approach and quotes from a paper by Gro Bjerknes and Tone Bratteteig.
Overview of Participatory Design from the University of Toronto
[Add link and summarize]
Pelle Ehn's book chapter on the Scandinavian roots of PD as well as the philosophy and practice of skills-based participatory design
Ehn, P. (1992). Scandinavian Design: On Participation and Skill. In P. S. Adler and T. A. Winograd (Eds.), Usability: Turning technologies into tools (pp. 96-132). New York: Oxford University Press.
See the resources page for pointers to books and articles that include histories and overviews of PD.

This page is produced by CPSR members Randy Trigg and Andrew Clement. Comments, suggestions and pointers to other resources are welcome.
