Words from the Web

by Marsha Woodbury

CPSR News Volume 15, Number 4: Fall 1997

----------

I wear many hats: Chair of CPSR, CPSR website manager, and head of Publications. For this newsletter, I am sharing m Words from the Web:

We finally have a new web server and will soon be updating our web pages in grand style. As many of you know, I gathered a team of volunteers to handle various parts of our Web site, only to be stymied by a lack of access. For the last two years we have been gnawing at the bit, waiting to realize our plans. Now we are a breath away from having

  • Search engines
  • Web chat boards
  • Secure money transfer
  • All of our CPSR newsletters on line in digital, searchable format
  • More Web pages on state, local, and international issues
  • New design
...and more. I am thrilled, and my thanks goes to all the members of the cpsr-tc group who made this possible. Our new system administrator is Dave Williams, and we will try to serve our members better as we grow. Your hints, suggestions, and volunteer time are always welcome. Please email me at: mwoodbury@cpsr.org to help.

CPSR tries to focus on "Hot Topics" at the top of our home page, http://www.cpsr.org. Right now the big issues are:

  • One Planet, One Net, our Internet governance campaign
  • Encryption and key recovery issues/updates from our CyberRights Working Group.
  • Our support of the Golden Key Privacy campaign and the Blue Ribbon campaign.
  • Star Wars, Down But Not Out.: updates by board member Carl Page on the SDI
  • The Millennium Problem -- What will happen to computers when the date changes from 1999 to 2000?
We also are trying to compile all the CPSR press releases and open letters, including the recent CPSR statement on DNS (domain names).

We have FTP and gopher files as well as Web pages. Many times each week we get queries about Chris Hibbert's Social Security Number pages, for example. We need more such resources.

Also, we need more volunteers to put our past newsletters into HTML for the web. Please contact me if you are ready, willing, and able. My apologies to those who stepped forward earlier, as we did not give you the work or access that we promised. Now we have our server, and we should be on our way.

Thanks again for all your support!
Marsha

Why did you join CPSR?

It is important for knowledgeable professionals to influence technology policy. Legislators and regulators are too often unfamiliar with the fields they control and are insufficiently aware of the consequences of their actions.
