In this latest extension of phishing, if bringing the mountain (or the phish) to Mohammed isn't working, try waiting for Mohammed to come to the mountain or in this case a person’s banking website. The website has been hacked and a redirect or rewritten links have been added that send the visitor off to pages that request personal information that the phisher uses to gain access to the person's banking and other financial records.

The Violence Against Women Act was reauthorized on January 5. While there is obviously a need for this type of legislation there are two sections in this bill that seriously infringe on our privacy and civil rights and should be addressed. Title X which increase FBI DNA collection abilities and the "Preventing Cyberstalking" section which by being overly broad and open to interpretation could end up having a chilling effect on free speech on blogs and other Internet postings.

The House voted 251-174 to approve a House-Senate compromise that would modify the Patriot Act and make permanent most of the 16 expiring provisions. We still need phone calls to stop this bad compromise from making its way through the Senate.

The purpose of these events is to facilitate focused, open, multistakeholder discussions on two major issues that were discussed in the report of the UN Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) and are prominent on the WSIS agenda for PrepCom-3 and beyond: 1) the possible creation of a new Forum for Internet governance dialogue, monitoring, and analysis; and 2) the possible reform of the current arrangements for Oversight of the Internet’s core resources (e.g. the root zone file and ICANN’s Government Advisory Committee). All attendees are very much welcome to participate in these discussions.

All News Items CPSR Signs EPIC's Comments Opposing DHS Database Exemptions

CPSR is one of more than 40 organizations signing comments in opposition to the proposed privacy exemptions for a new Homeland Security database. The exemptions would waive the legal requirements designed to protect individual privacy, promote government accountability and provide legislative oversight over government collection of data. The Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) extensive new database, The Homeland Security Operations Center Database, is to be exempt from section (g) of the Privacy Act of 1974, which would deny individuals the right to make certain that information maintained by the agency is correct. In addition, individuals will be denied judicial review of DHS's determinations.

All News Items Appropriation Bill, including Real ID, Passes Senate 100-0

HR 1268 passed the Senate 100-0 on May 10, 2005 and is now on its way to the President for his signature which is guaranteed. The Real ID Bill was tacked onto the appropriation bill when it seemed that it might face some trouble in the Senate given it didn't pass the House with the majority that conservatives expected.

When it looked like the Real ID might have some trouble in the Senate, conservatives tacked it onto HR 1268 which provides emergency supplemental funds for the Iraq war and Tsunami disaster relief, making it difficult to stop the bill without seeming to be against approving money for soldiers and disaster victims. HR 1268 just passed the House 368-58 on 5/5/05. It is expected to go through the Senate next week. Find a link at the end of this article to send a fax to your Senators.

All News Items CPSR endorses International Campaign Against Mass Surveillance (ICAMS)

The ICAMS was founded by concerns that global security and the 'war on terror' have led nations around the world to adopt measures that roll back freedom and increase police powers to control individuals and populations. It calls on governments around the world to "abandon the intrusive and discriminatory measures inherent in the practice of mass registration and surveillance, and put the genuine protection and development of citizens – in the fullest sense, including the protection of our rights – at the centre of any approach to 'security'," and makes five recommendations to protect citizens.
